Antique Hand Cut Canivet Holy Card Saint PhillipEarly 19th century devotional painting of Saint Phillip. These delicately pierced cards are known as a canivets, so called for the name of the small knife used to cut the intricate patterns. Cloistered nuns and monks made these to support themselves or charities. These beautiful pieces were the precursor to the machine made lace paper seen in so many later devotional cards, which are also called canivets. The perforations on this one are very fine,
