Lozi Drum 03This drum originates from the Lozi people of Zambia, it has been hand carved from indigenous wood and finished with a natural leather hide. The drum has a beautiful patina and wear from years of use. Drums have a rich history in African culture. This long drum is known as a Mwamwa or Mufula, it would have been used as a method of communication between communities, to send messages over long distances as well as announcing important ceremonies. The
Shields are widely used throughout Africa forming an indispensable part of dances and ceremonies
They would have traditionally been worn on the head during ceremonies
